Over the hump??? (and a CONGRATS!)

… I may be speaking too soon, but I just might have gotten myself over the proverbial hump of starting (what seemed to be a monumental shift in )a new way of eating today.

Finally.

It didn’t seem “Hard” today- While I didn’t get much sleep (ok any) last night for a ton of reasons, I got myself out of bed at 6am, got my workout clothes on, and worked out. (the link will show you how excited I really was about this feat) :-)

Oh screw it, I will post it again here too! ;-) I am proud, darn it!

I had a very satisfying dinner full of veggies and lean protein- i didn’t miss the heavy sauces or sweets I would usually consume at dinner. It is about 2 hours after eating and I don’t feel sluggish and the need to fall asleep in front of the TV- actually, I think I am going to go unpack a few boxes.

This morning I took a page from Jen at Prior Fat Girl and took My Sweaty Proof pic after I worked out early this AM- I shared it with her for her page and thought I would share it here:

Not only is she on the homepage for losing 70lbs, but she is the most popular story right now!! CONGRATS GIRL! (She’s even more popular that the healthcare bill passing the senate!!)

AJ tries her best… Day 2

I sent time outside of the house today, took a nap, ran errands and spent time with good firends for dinner.

What I ate:

Breakfast:

  • cottage cheese
  • water
  • 13 high fiber crackers
  • blackberries and raspberries (2 servings of fruit)

Lunch was at Whole Foods for lunch, ate from the salad bar:

  • BIG water
  • double service of dry steamed broccoli with lemon and pepper only (2 servings of veggies)
  • serving of cooked carrots (1 serving of veggies)
  • 1/2 the serving spoon of mac and cheese (about 4 forkfuls)
  • 1 large thin slice fresh smoked turkey breast that was TO DIE FOR. They had just brought it out of the the smoker and carved it in front of my eyes. So good.

Snack:

  • greek yogurt (lots of protein)
  • water

Dinner:

  • Lou Malnotti’s pizza (2 pieces from a small pizza)
  • One  12 oz diet coke
  • 12 oz hot tea
  • water

What I liked about today:

  • spent time with friends and really enjoyed myself, without dwelling on the fact that “bad” food was going to be part of the night. Yes, I ate pizza, yes, I drank soda. But the PROUD OF ME moment is that I only ate 2 slices when I would have normally eaten 6. I had only one 12 oz soda – normally it would have been 4 or 5. I ate slowly, enjoyed the moment with my friends and savored the pizza I had. It was a very good night.
  • While I didn’t formally workout (AGAIN!) today, I did get in 5100 steps. That is 1/2 way to my goal of 10,000 steps a day. I have to remember that slow and steady wins the race. I can and will work my way up to 10,000.

What was kind of a set back today:

  • The whole no formal workout thing bummed me out. I know I will get there. I feel like I need to get a handle on my eating first (which I seem to be doing pretty well so far. My goal is to get 6000 steps tomorrow. I know I can do it.

How did you do?

Day One- AJ is Adjusting

So, you ask:

AJ- HOWDYA DO ON YOUR FIRST DAY???

Pretty good thank you. Not the best, not the worst.

Here’s what I ate:

  • 1 single size low fat cottage cheese
  • Fruit 2 Day- Cherry Grape
  • small honey crisp apple
  • 1/2 of a 3 egg omelet (ham and low fat cheese)
  • cut fresh fruit
  • 8 oz fresh squeeze OJ
  • 1 piece whole wheat toast with 1 tsp homemade grape jelly (no butter)
  • (dinner- not sure yet but probably a salad with veggies and a small amount of vinaigrette dressing, a bit of low fat cheese, maybe some baked chicken if I get some gumption)
  • 3 PopChips (trying them- not my favorite yet but OK)
  • WATER!!! About 40oz so far and more throughout the night

What I liked about today:

  • This is the first day in about 2 months where the words “fast food” “fried” or “drive-through” has not been mentioned.
  • While a formal workout was not included (but will be tomorrow) I got up early, showered, and walked alot today.
  • When I realized I was tired, I stopped what I was doing and took a 2 hour nap. Usually, I would have eaten something (sugary or fatty) to keep me energized.
  • DIET SODA WAS NOT IN MY BRAIN OR MY BODY TODAY!!!

I amPROUD OF MY SELF for:

  • Going to the grocery store even though my friend that I am also eating healthy with did not go. She wants to start later this week (b/c she has been deathly ill and is not even hungry yet) but I made a promise to myself and I am tired of feeling crappy all the time. Just because she is not ready does not mean I am not ready. This is for me not for her.
  • Going to breakfast with friends, ordering healthy and eating almost half of what you ordered is AWESOME! WTG me!

What was kind of a set back today:

  • I didn’t get a workout in. I really wanted to, but the day got away from me. Not a set back, as I really want to get my eating in check first. But working out is the only way I am going to burn calories.

I think adjusting is the right word for what I did today. I am proud of myself but I know I can push myself to the limit.

New Years Resolutions: To make, or not to make?

(due to an internet outage, I wasn’t able to post this until the new year. Anyway, here it is now)

Every year I make a few resolutions, and every year I get to February 1st and realize I am scarfing down McDonald’s like a champ or forgetting to not working out because I am “tired”.

Like Roni says, eating meals that are healthy and filling are a lifestyle choice, and it is a choice that you have to just come to. You have to decide to make healthy eating a priority. Yuo have to make exercising a have to, a part of your daily routine, not a maybe or an I’ll get to it.

I have to make working out a priority. I have to make eating healthy a priority. I don’t think these lifestyle changes count as “resolutions”. If I think of eating healthy and working out as anything BUT lifestyle changes, I have a feeling I will crap out almost immediately.

For the last 3 days, I have been doing 3 things that I have been hesitant about talking about on this blog. For some reason, I am afraid if I say it out loud I may jinx myself.

1. I have been doing yoga for 30 minutes each night before I go to bed. Mind you, it is not Power Yoga for Experts or anything, but I am doing all the moves and it is making me both sweat and I am a tiny bit sore in the morning. I am doing Yoga for Back Pain and Hatha Yoga for Beginners.

2. I have been eating a packed, fresh lunch each day at work and a healthy home made dinner at home each night. I have even had a healthy breakfast each day. I am actually getting my recommended fruits and veggies in too! My only downfall has been 1% hot chocolate with reduced fat whipped cream and OIL POPPED POPCORN each night. I know, I know. I have no excuse except it’s Christmas and I was not with my biological family this year (and we always have oil popped popcorn and HC for a snack on Christmas Eve).

3. While I have been getting to sleep late each night, I have been getting more restful sleep and I am not so sleepy in the morning. I chalk this up to yoga, better eating, and finally getting the humidifier back up and running (mold, be gone!).

I am afraid saying these things out loud will make me stop doing them.

If you ask any of my friends/colleagues/family, they will tell you that I am not one to take a compliment. At all. I am that annoying person that says things like “but I don’t have any makeup on” or “well, you should see my (insert random body part here) if you think I look thinner today” or “sure, WHATever (while rolling my eyes)” when a complement comes my way. I have friends who don’t even try to give me an attaboy anymore.  I need to learn to take compliments this year.  I need to learn to say Thank You – not “but…”

So while I guess I won’t have “resolutions” this year, I will have goals.

And I will go my best to get close to achieving them.
