What is this? A freak out? Awwwww, Freak Out!

The weeks are flying past so quickly- I have already been in school almost a month — it really feels like school started yesterday. My first big research paper (in over 10 years) is due next Monday and I am kinda freaking out. I haven’t written a scholastic paper in a long long long long long long time.

Yeah, that long.

I have my topic chosen, my research done, my verbal outline in a .wav file on my phone.

Now comes the rough draft part.

I hate rough drafts.

But weren’t you an editor of a magazine, you ask. Shouldn’t you LOVE to write??

Yes, I was the editor or a magazine (but, funny story, I hate to edit my own things. Case in point: This blog…) Yes I do love to write, but I have a very casual not-at-all scholarly style of writing– and the teacher who will be grading this is a pain in my you-now-what.

Anyway, I will post later with an update on how I do on the paper (which counts for 40 percent of my grade. OUCH)

In sad news, I got Mr More back from the vet on Friday. I had him cremated. It is so nice to have him back home with me.

In kinda-sad news, I found out a few weeks ago that a mandatory math class for grad school will fall on the same weekend as BlogHer in NYC. I am sad, but as I keep saying, grad school comes first. I am in the process of selling my ticket and giving up my hotel room. I guess that means I will have more money for Fitbloggin ’11, right? Right?!?!

I made a pot roast in the crock pot tonight — I filled the crock with veggies!! YUMMO!So excited to have halfway decent lunched for the week!

Hope you have a productive and healthy week!

3 Weeks down…and a few updates

This week was hard.

Mr More was a big part of my life, and with his death last Saturday, I wore my heart on my sleeve for most of the week. I made it to the bathroom before it happened, but I cried on Monday during a break at grad school. The teacher is NOT A NICE PERSON and she embarrassed me in front of the class. Normally I would have just sucked it up, but since I was so emotional, it really tore me up. The other girls in the class helped calm me down, but I was a mess for a few minutes. I think the fact that I hadn’t cried since the beginning of school and I had alot of pent up stress really didn’t help the situation. :-)

School (other than the teacher from hell) has been going well. I love all but one of my classes, and feel like I am keeping up with the (massive amounts) of work. I have two 10 page papers due in 2 weeks, so I have a new source of stress. I have been out of school for 10 years and I can’t remember the last “academic” paper I had to write. One of the papers is for the class/teacher I dislike, so I am not excited to even start it. But I have done some of the research, so I at least know my topic and sources.

My eating has been OUT OF CONTROL. I have been “trying” the new food around school, interspersed with bringing my lunch from home. The problem with bringing my lunch is that I am not getting enough protein and I am getting WAY too much sugar. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY toooooooooooo much sugar.

My pants are getting tight and I have been feeling crappy. Also, I have a HUGE, painful underground pimple on my chin that is Reeeeeeally pretty. I went to the store Friday and bought more protein-rich foods, and more veggies. GOAL: I am going to try to bring my lunch 3 days next week and make better choices when I eat out. On the positive side, there is a Subway right downstairs from my morning classroom; they have really good healthy choices and it helps me getting veggies and protein in during the day.

I spent my day yesterday at a friend’s wedding (which was beautiful) and was able to relax by taking photos. Taking pictures and learning the ins and outs of my camera is really relaxing to me. Below are two of my (no people in the picture) favorites…

I got a new MacBook Pro laptop 2 weeks ago and I am GIDDY- I love this thing. It makes my grad school life SO much easier. I now have a reliable computer than can be completely wireless for more than 15 minutes. Oh, and that turns on (every time) when I open the lid.

OK, I gotta go figure out what I am going to eat for dinner. Will be back later this week with an update (hopefully). :-)

Mr. More

My poor 16 year old cat is at the end of his life. I found out last Tuesday that he has Intestinal Lymphoma. There is not a lot the vet can do for him other than make him comfortable. He has been a loyal friend for over 5 years and I am truly going to miss him when he is gone. I will find out the final final diagnosis on Monday.

Needless to say, my stress level has been through the roof and I have been eating everything bad I can get my hands on. Workouts are a joke as I want to spend as much time as possible with him before I lose him.

Below are a few photos of my big fur child.

AJ is Starving…

I am so freaking hungry.

I had nothing ready/available for lunch or dinner today. Dumb, I know, but I guess I really wasn’t as prepared as I thought for bootcamp day one. Lunch was tuna , 13 whole wheat crackers and a single serving of low-fat cottage cheese. Oh, and water. And some black berries.

For dinner, I had some left over crock pot chicken, but no brown rice or veggies to go with it. Ran to the grocery store tonight at 7:30 (30 minutes before I wanted to be “done” eating for the night) and was over-hungry*.

Nothing looked remotely good.

I grabbed 3 packages of frozen brown rice, steam in a bag fresh broccoli and cauliflower, 3 cans of 98% fat free cream of mushroom soup (for a crockpot recipe) and a few other things (including cat food for my poor little big hungry one). I threw the rice in the micro, then the leftover chicken, then the bag of veggies. I had a meal in under 10 minutes, and of course, I wolfed it down. I had 3 veggies left and 1/2 my plate of chicken and rice, and I am feeling full but not stuffed (a 4 on the WW Momentum 1-5 scale).

Also, I had about 5 sips of Diet Coke, and while I am not happy about it, I had a raging I-haven’t-had-a-diet-soda-in-2-days-and-haven’t-eaten-since-1pm headache. I am happy to say it is gone. To break the soda dependency, I am going to have to go slow. Maybe one a day for a few days, then 1/2 for a few days, then 1/2 every other day until I lose the headaches. This going cold turkey is for the birds.

This is the part of working out I haven’t figured out- I have never been able to eat well AND excercise a the same time.

It is either one or the other. Walk four 5k’s and one 10k during the year, eat alot of crap. Eat well, absolutely no exercise.

I am sure it is a dance I will learn to do over time, but I always seem to fail at one as I succeed at the other.

OK, I am going to clean up my dishes and get to bed so I can be up at 5 tomorrow morning. :-)

*Old over-hungry me would have ran to McDonald’s instead of the store, so that is a small NSV.

Halfway there…

Just a quick check in from my hotel– I am about halfway to Chicago.

I started the day at my last day at the office, turned in my keys, then went to my final walkthrough with the rental comapny. I am VERY DISAPPOINTED in the way they do business, and NEVER EVER want to rent from another company again– but that i for a different post at a different time. :-)

Anyway, I went and picked up an extremely pissed off cat at the vet/boarders and we started on our way.

The drive was pretty uneventful  – I love driving through the mountains while the leaves are changing. I really wish I had a “real” camera, but I took a few snaps with my cell phone while I was on the road– I hope you can see the changing colors.

I had booked a room in Clarkston Clarksville (for some reason I keep calling it ‘Clarkston’- strange) and I am glad I did, because about 4 miles from the exit it started DOWNPOURING.

I ran into the front desk of the hotel to check in (leaving the cat in his carrier for a few minutes because it was raining so hard) and when I came out to get him, the car stunk to holy hell.

He had made what I call an ‘F-U Poo’*— and not in his makeshift litterbox. ALL OVER HIS CARRIER- His fabric pop-up, hard to clean carrier.

Thank JEBUS I had thought to put down two tarps- one under and one between the cat and his carrier. He was COVERED in it.

I think he even might have rolled in it.

**Shakes head**

I got him in his small carrier, then I brought it into the room, then put him into the tub for a bath.

Talk about a pissed off cat. I got the growls, claws and bites he had been holding onto for 3 days while he was boarded.

He is now sitting at the end of the bed all fluffy and clean. And purring. I think he forgives me. I hope he does at least. :-)

I will head out again tomorrow;  hopefully it will be done storming by then.

*A ‘F-U Poo’ is the poo that the cat/dog does when they are nervous/scared/pissed/angry – it is part ‘regular’ poo, and part super-duper stinky diarrhea.

Where the heck has AJ been: An update

I am sure some of you have been wondering! :-)

I have been overwhelmed at work and home and am just coming out of it.

First, my mom is sick again. She now has been diagnosed with Type II Diabetes and is scared and overwhelmed. She already has high blood pressure and severe sleep apnea, so she is batting 3 for 3 right now. She lives in California and won’t let me come visit to help her. I told her that I would look into a “new way of living” for her (read: diet/excercise plan) and with the guidence of my doctor (since she can’t get into a dietician for at least 3 months) I have decided to do the South Beach Diet along with my mom so she can get her eating on track. She has been eating nothing but pizza and chinese for the past 2 years so I think eating “real” food will help put her on the right track. She is currently only on the diabetes pills right now (no shots, thank God) and will have to start testing her blood regularly. I am stressed out that I cannot go see her, but atleast I have her trying to get healthy. The SBD is very close to WW CORE, so after the initial 2 weeks of no fruit and bread, I will actually be following CORE and not SBD, but will tell my mom I an following SBD so she will not feel alone. the good thing about this is we are sharing our daily food logs via email so I will FINALLY have a reason to start posting them here again! YIPPEE!

I FINALLY found a WW meeting close to work/home that I will begin going to on Tuesday nights. SO HAPPY!

I have not gained or lost the past month, which is good and bad. I think eating better with my mom will help me begin to lose again. I am currently at the weight my body wants to stay at, so it will take another jump start to get going again. I hope CORE will do it.

Work is crazy-busy: I have been working on a proposal with another colleague and it is finally done. Whew! I started a new job in January and it has been kicking my butt.

Mr More has been happily eating hard boiled egg yokes at home and is fat n’ happy. If I have time, I will post a few new photos.

We cannot get out of the snow/freezing cold/thaw/snow/repeat weather pattern to save our lives in the Midwest. I cannot wait for spring to come. It is really time for the snow to end. Because of the crazy thaw/freeze pattern, we have GIGANTIC pottholes to deal with. More cars are having severe alignment and tire damage than the city has seen in 20 years. They cannot fill them fast enough. Thank GOD I drive very rarely.

Invisalign update: I am only 1 tray away from being finished with my bottom teeth! They are super straight and when I think of it, I will post the “before” and “after” pics. I am 1/2 done with my top teeth. I should be totally done by the end of July 2008. I can’t believe how fast time flies!

Anyway, off to work! I have plans to get updated on all of your lives today at lunch and tonight (since I have live 300 posts to read). I hope you are all doing well and I can’t wait to catch up!

Can’t seem to catch a break lately-

I have a yucky infection in my gums that started yesterday – not nearly as bad as the one my mom had, but yucky none the less. I can’t wear my invisalign and i am having trouble eating anything more chewy than oatmeal…. darnit! The dentist thinks I have a piece of food stuck that is causing the infection between my back upper right 2 teeth. It is affecting my whole right side of my face though and my lymph nodes are really doing their job – my neck is swollen with them, along with the nodes right along my jawline. This next part is kinda gross so skip if needed. The dentist told me to soak floss in a hydrogen peroxcide/water mixture and tenderly floss the sections that are infected to help draw out some of the swelling. He said it wil bleed, but it is actually doing some good getting in there and maybe working the piece of food out. Then he said I should also rinse with saltwater and/or Listerine. Well, I have been doing all of this. Let me tell you, the floss thing hurts like hell, but I think it is actually working. The swelling is down a bit today. While my gums have not been bleeding, they did turn a nasty shade of dark purple and angry looking – when the dentist saw them he said ”well, I can see what you mean by ‘scary looking’” but he also said this is fairly common. Whew – I like fairly common… :-)

Anyway, If the swelling is not completely down/gone by Friday I am gonna run in to his office and get a prescription for antibiotics as I head out of town for a good friend’s wedding.

So here is my day in a nutshell -

  • 7:15AM get up to a wailing cat to feed and give him a shot
  • back to sleep – I love sleep
  • call invisalign dentist – tell him what normal dentist said last night after stayed he after hours to see me (what a nice guy)
  • swish with peroxide; swish with salt water, floss and scream, take 3 motrin
  • call mom to give her update on how I am feeling
  • back to sleep – I love vacation
  • try to eat lunch, end up throwing it away and eating oatmeal
  • swish with peroxide; swish with salt water, floss and scream, take 3 motrin
  • watch TiVo’ed Oprah, Law and Order and In the Loop with iVillage
  • sleep sleep sleep
  • wake up to mom calling to see how I am feeling
  • go get mail; put Netflix’ed Knocked Up in DVD player; laugh uncontrolably
  • swish with peroxide; swish with salt water, floss and scream, forget to take 3 motrin
  • finish wacthing DVD extras from Knocked Up, put in The Queen
  • realize extra large orange cat has not been given evening shot or food – mom apologized to extremely pissed off cat-child
  • Order comfort food of Fish and chips from favorite take out place
  • eat 2 bites of fish and 10 fries before giving up on food for the day
  • pet/play fetch with extra large cat-child who is now extremely pleased after getting a few bites of left over fish
  • watch TiVo’ed TV for a while
  • swish with peroxide; swish with salt water, floss and scream, take 2 motrin with sleep aid
  • Update blog on brand. new. computer! I am in love.
  • hopefully sleep all through the night without extra large orange cat licking me/wanting to play at 4:15AM…. I can wish.

Have a great night everyone – the sleeping pill is kicking in!

Lazy Sunday

Dear Self: taking your 30 minute walk is a good thing- but stopping for lunch at McDonald’s 1/2 way there is NOT a good thing.

I spent most of the day watching a mini Big Love marathon – I had the last 5 eps from this season on TiVo and have not had a chace to watch them. Can I dell you how much I love having 2 weeks of from work?? I enjoy staying up late and sleeping late, doing whatever I want during the day (shop, sleep, whatever) and being able to spend time with Mr. More. He is so funny to watch during the day – he plays with his toys all day and when he is hungry at about 6pm, he goes and lays near his bowl with the look on his face like “starving mom-starving… can’t. make. it. to. the. bowl.” So So cute. :-) Anyway, hope you had a great weekend! Enjoy your week! AJ
