Where the heck has AJ been: An update

I am sure some of you have been wondering! :-)

I have been overwhelmed at work and home and am just coming out of it.

First, my mom is sick again. She now has been diagnosed with Type II Diabetes and is scared and overwhelmed. She already has high blood pressure and severe sleep apnea, so she is batting 3 for 3 right now. She lives in California and won’t let me come visit to help her. I told her that I would look into a “new way of living” for her (read: diet/excercise plan) and with the guidence of my doctor (since she can’t get into a dietician for at least 3 months) I have decided to do the South Beach Diet along with my mom so she can get her eating on track. She has been eating nothing but pizza and chinese for the past 2 years so I think eating “real” food will help put her on the right track. She is currently only on the diabetes pills right now (no shots, thank God) and will have to start testing her blood regularly. I am stressed out that I cannot go see her, but atleast I have her trying to get healthy. The SBD is very close to WW CORE, so after the initial 2 weeks of no fruit and bread, I will actually be following CORE and not SBD, but will tell my mom I an following SBD so she will not feel alone. the good thing about this is we are sharing our daily food logs via email so I will FINALLY have a reason to start posting them here again! YIPPEE!

I FINALLY found a WW meeting close to work/home that I will begin going to on Tuesday nights. SO HAPPY!

I have not gained or lost the past month, which is good and bad. I think eating better with my mom will help me begin to lose again. I am currently at the weight my body wants to stay at, so it will take another jump start to get going again. I hope CORE will do it.

Work is crazy-busy: I have been working on a proposal with another colleague and it is finally done. Whew! I started a new job in January and it has been kicking my butt.

Mr More has been happily eating hard boiled egg yokes at home and is fat n’ happy. If I have time, I will post a few new photos.

We cannot get out of the snow/freezing cold/thaw/snow/repeat weather pattern to save our lives in the Midwest. I cannot wait for spring to come. It is really time for the snow to end. Because of the crazy thaw/freeze pattern, we have GIGANTIC pottholes to deal with. More cars are having severe alignment and tire damage than the city has seen in 20 years. They cannot fill them fast enough. Thank GOD I drive very rarely.

Invisalign update: I am only 1 tray away from being finished with my bottom teeth! They are super straight and when I think of it, I will post the “before” and “after” pics. I am 1/2 done with my top teeth. I should be totally done by the end of July 2008. I can’t believe how fast time flies!

Anyway, off to work! I have plans to get updated on all of your lives today at lunch and tonight (since I have live 300 posts to read). I hope you are all doing well and I can’t wait to catch up!

A Shout Out and my new fun group

Not only do I want to give a shout out to my new online/through the mail Sexy Exy Book Club leader Britt at FluentBrittish, but she gave me a shout out here! I am slightly famous! :-)

Britt has been doing this cool book exchange for a bit, and I found out about it at Clarrisa’s blog. I thought it would be cool to share my current favorite book/writer, Bitter is the New Black by Jen Lancaster. I was a bit apprehensive about one of the”rules” : we were to annotate the book as we read, and after it makes the rounds, we will have 4-5 different views on the book written in different colors. After I started writing though, I realized how much fun it was to add my comments as I read (I added a TON of LOL’s and ROTFLMAO’s) I my next book sometime next week and I am excited to start reading – I have decided since I have a month to finish it before passing it on, I am going to use my time ON THE TREADMILL (since it is SO DAMN FRICKING COLD HERE) and I challenge myself to ONLY read the new book on the treadmill – since I have a deadline, it will FORCE me to get my saggy butt working out. A win-win for everyone, right?!? :-)

By the way, totally random but anyone have any idea how to cut a mango? I bought two today at the grocery store and I am clueless. Thanks for any help you can give me!

Horrific day for Illinois…

My prayers and thoughts are with those affected by the NIU shooting today…

DEKALB, Illinois (CNN) — A gunman dressed in black stepped from behind a curtain at the front of a large lecture hall at Northern Illinois University on Thursday and shot 21 people, five of them fatally, then turned shot and killed himself, said university president John Peters. Four died at the scene, including the shooter, and two later died at the hospital, he said.
At least 22 people, including a graduate student who was teaching an ocean sciences class, were shot, Peters said. Seventeen victims were taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital, its Web site said.
Of those, six were in critical condition and were flown to other hospitals. One fatality, a male, was confirmed — but was not the gunman, the hospital said. Two were admitted, and three others were discharged. The other five were not addressed on the Web site. Four of the fatalities were female, said Peters. Most of the injuries are head and chest gunshot wounds, a hospital spokeswoman told CNN.
The gunman started shooting from a stage in the room shortly after 3 p.m. (4 p.m. ET) in Cole Hall, officials said. Police Chief Donald Grady said authorities do not yet know of a motive.
They know the identity of the gunman but have not released his name, Grady added. The shooter was a graduate student at NIU in the spring of 2007. Currently he was not enrolled there but, Grady said, “He may have been a student elsewhere.” Kevin McEnery said he was in the classroom when the gunman, dressed in a black shirt, dark pants and black hat, burst in carrying a shotgun.
“He just kicked the door open, just started shooting,” said McEnery, who was in the class at the time. “All I really heard was just people screaming, yelling ‘get out.’ … Close to 30 shots were fired.”
There are about 162 registered students in the class that met in the large lecture hall. A student described the classroom as having four exits – two at the front and two at the rear. “Witnesses say someone dressed in black came out from behind a screen in the front of the classroom and opened fire with a shotgun,” Peters said. At 3:03 p.m., NIU police responded, and four minutes later, the campus was ordered into “a lockdown situation,” Grady said. At 3:20, an all-campus alert went out via the campus Web site, e-mail, voice mail, the campus crisis hotline, the news media and various alarm systems, he said. “The message basically was: There’s a gunman on campus, stay where you are, make yourself as safe as possible,” he said. Rosie Moroni, a student at the school, told CNN she was outside Cole Hall near the King Commons when she heard shots coming from the classroom she was heading to. The shot was followed by “a lot of people screaming,” then people ran out the doors yelling, “He’s got a gun, call 9-1-1,” she said. “It was complete chaos. It’s very scary here right now.” By 4 p.m., DeKalb police had swept the area “and determined there was only one gunman” and that he was dead. Grady said the man used three guns: a shotgun, a Glock handgun and a small-caliber handgun, and was still on the stage when he turned one of the guns on himself. The small-caliber handgun has not been recovered, he said. The shooter started with a shotgun, then switched to a handgun, said Grady. A spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives told CNN that agents were on the scene, and could help trace the weapon or weapons used. Peters said the FBI is processing the crime scene and ATF was interviewing witnesses Thursday. Events and classes were canceled until further notice, Peters said. Seven counseling areas were set up throughout the campus, and hotlines were established. Security around campus was increased in December when police found threats scrawled on a campus bathroom wall that included racial slurs and references to last April’s Virginia Tech shootings. One of the threats said “things will change most hastily” in the final days of the semester. Peters said there is no evidence that points to a link between the December incident and Thursday’s shooting. Grady said it was unlikely authorities could have prevented Thursday’s tragedy. “As much as we do, it’s unlikely that anyone would ever have the ability to stop an incident like this from beginning,” he said. Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich declared a state of emergency, which will open the governor’s disaster fund to reimburse local government entities for “extraordinary expenses related to the response in NIU DeKalb” and will allow the state Emergency Management Agency to provide assistance, the governor’s office said in a statement. The 113-year-old school is 65 miles west of downtown Chicago and has an enrollment of more than 25,000. The campus covers 755 acres.

The Wii…

…TOTALLY kicked my butt last night. I was at a friends house and they broke out the Wii. We played tennis, boxing (OW OW OW OW my arms are killing me today), golf (I suck at golf), some crazy bunny dancing/shooting game that was fun, Madden ’08 (promise girls, it was actually fun and I HATE boy computer games), and my new favorite, Guitar Hero III.  I can see why people have lost weight while playing the Wii – the boxing game? Yeah, kicked my ass and took names. I was sweating, out of breath and my arms were killing me after ONLY 3 short rounds. This morning I woke to sore sides (you have to duck and cover a lot) and my arms feel like I did a 45 minutes workout.

If I had $250.00 to spare, I would TOTALLY run out and get a Wii right now (if I could find one - I hear they are still hard to find right now). I bet I would lose 20lbs of upper arm fat just from the boxing game. We had Dance Dance Revolution to try too (DDR), but I was too tired and sore to try it. That would be another 20lbs of lower body fat from DDR. No trainer needed! :-)

Oh yeah, Guitar Hero III. I have heard so much about this game and let me tell you -very addictive and very fun (once you get the hang of it). I was doing so well, I was asked by the computer to do an encore… I rock. :-)

I realized I am much better at the “timing and single player-no-one-else-has-to-depend-on-me-to-catch-a-football” type of game that the others. I won almost all of those. The Madden game? While fun, I suck at catching passes thrown at me. :-)

Vacation!

I am on vacation today and Monday from work. I hope to get some blogging done, some housework and get some extra rest. I love 4 day weekends, don’t you? :-)

SNOW DAY!!

I am home from work as my boss called everyone this morning and said the weather outlook is too scary for us all to head in to the office. I love snow days. My grandma calls snow days “bonus days” — when my mom and her siblings were young and they got a weather day off from school my g-ma always got “bonus” cleaning out of them – the house always sparkled when she got home from work. :-) My mom, the oldest girl, hated snow days… :-)

I will probably call this day a bonus day too– the litterbox, laundry and dishes are all starting to pile up and I need to scrub the kitchen floors.
